Thimble Insurance Review 2026: Hourly, Daily, and Monthly Liability Coverage

This review is built from Thimble's own pricing and coverage pages, its 2023 acquisition disclosures, AM Best rating data, and named third-party cost surveys, not first-hand use — we're an independent review site, not a licensed insurance agent or agency, and nothing here is insurance advice. Confirm any figure with a licensed agent in your state before you buy.

Thimble's pitch is narrow: instead of a 12-month general liability policy you pay for whether you work or not, you buy coverage by the hour, the day, or the month, and you can pause it between jobs. That fits photographers, DJs, cleaners, personal trainers, and seasonal contractors better than it fits a business that runs full-time year-round. Below is what Thimble sells, who is financially behind the policies, what it costs, and where an annual policy from ERGO NEXT Insurance or Hiscox is the better call instead.

What Thimble Actually Is

Thimble is a managing general agent (MGA), not an insurance carrier. It designs the policies and runs the quote-and-bind app, but the underwriting risk sits with partner insurance companies. Arch Insurance — part of Arch Capital Group, a publicly traded, S&P 500 reinsurer — acquired Thimble in April 2023, per Arch Insurance's own acquisition announcement and Insurance Journal's coverage at the time. Thimble kept its own brand and its existing carrier relationships after the deal; Arch's balance sheet sits behind the product rather than replacing it.

On the underwriting side, Thimble's policies are placed with partner carriers that include Markel Insurance Company and National Specialty Insurance Company, with AM Best financial-strength ratings reported in the A- to A++ (Excellent to Superior) range, per MoneyGeek's 2026 Thimble review. Which specific carrier issues your policy depends on your state and the product line, so check the carrier name printed on your actual policy documents and certificate of insurance rather than assuming it matches a review article.

What's Covered — and What Isn't

Thimble's core products are:

  • General liability (GL) — third-party bodily injury, property damage, and related legal defense costs. Sold by the hour, day, month, or year.
  • Professional liability (E&O) — claims tied to mistakes, missed deadlines, or bad advice in your professional services. Can be bundled with GL.
  • Workers' compensation — available in some states for businesses with employees or subcontractors who need proof of coverage.
  • Tools and equipment coverage — an add-on for contractors who need their gear insured against theft or damage on the job.

What Thimble does not do well: long-term, complex commercial risk. If you need a full business owner's policy (BOP) with property, business interruption, and liability bundled for a fixed physical location, or you run a business with steady year-round revenue where per-hour pricing stops making sense, an annual carrier is usually cheaper and simpler to manage.

Thimble Pricing (Checked September 2026)

Per Thimble's own general liability and professional liability cost pages, general liability policies start at $17 a month, with small business owners paying an average of $42 a month, or $504 a year, depending on trade, location, team size, and coverage duration. A bundled general liability plus professional liability policy starts at $36 a month when purchased together. Hourly and daily rates exist for one-off gigs and events but Thimble does not publish a single flat per-hour number — it's calculated at quote time based on trade and limits, so treat "$5 an hour" marketing lines as a floor, not a quote.

For comparison, Insureon — which aggregates quotes across dozens of carriers — reports an average general liability premium of $45 a month among its small-business customers, with annual premiums ranging from $265 to $3,030, with 22% paying under $30 a month (Insureon's general liability cost page). Hiscox lists general liability starting at $29.17 a month on its own cost page. None of these numbers is your quote; trade, claims history, location, and coverage limits move the price in both directions.

ERGO NEXT Insurance is the renamed NEXT Insurance brand — ERGO, the primary insurance arm of reinsurance giant Munich Re, completed a $2.6 billion acquisition in Q3 2025 and rolled out the ERGO NEXT name in January 2026, according to Insurance Business magazine and Insurance Journal's coverage of the rebrand. The product and underwriting didn't change with the name; if you researched "NEXT Insurance" before 2026, you're looking at the same company.

When Short-Term Coverage Beats an Annual Policy — and When It Doesn't

Short-term, on-demand coverage from Thimble makes sense when:

  • You work seasonally (landscaping in spring/summer, holiday event staffing) and don't want to pay premiums during your off months.
  • You take occasional side gigs and need a certificate of insurance (COI) fast for a single job or venue booking.
  • You're testing a new service line and don't yet know if you'll keep doing it long enough to justify an annual commitment.

An annual policy from a carrier like Hiscox or ERGO NEXT usually wins when:

  • You work full-time, year-round, and the per-month cost of stacking short-term policies exceeds an annual premium.
  • You need a bundled BOP with property coverage, not just liability.
  • A client or landlord requires ongoing, uninterrupted coverage with no gaps, which is easier to guarantee on a standard annual term than on a policy you're actively pausing and restarting.

Certificates of Insurance and Mid-Term Changes

One of Thimble's most-cited features, per its own certificate manager and COI pages, is that a certificate of insurance is generated immediately after purchase — no waiting on a broker email. Policyholders can add additional insureds (a venue, general contractor, or property manager requiring proof of coverage) and request more certificates at no extra charge through Thimble's free Certificate Manager tool. You can also modify, pause, or cancel a policy from the app rather than calling an agent, which matters if your work schedule is unpredictable.

FAQ

Is Thimble a real insurance company? No — Thimble is a managing general agent (MGA). It designs and sells the policies and handles the app and claims intake, but partner carriers such as Markel Insurance Company and National Specialty Insurance Company hold the underwriting risk, per MoneyGeek's 2026 review of Thimble's carrier relationships. Arch Insurance, part of Arch Capital Group, acquired Thimble in April 2023.

Can I get instant proof of insurance from Thimble? Yes. Per Thimble's own certificate manager pages, a certificate of insurance is issued immediately after you buy a policy, and you can add additional insureds or request extra certificates at no charge through the Thimble app.

Does Thimble cost more than an annual policy over a full year? It can. Thimble's general liability starts at $17 a month with an average around $42 a month ($504 a year) per Thimble's own cost pages, while Insureon reports a $45-a-month average across its small-business customers. If you work year-round, price both a full annual term and 12 stacked short-term months before deciding — the cheaper option depends on your specific trade and location.

Is NEXT Insurance the same company as ERGO NEXT Insurance? Yes. NEXT Insurance rebranded as ERGO NEXT Insurance in January 2026 after ERGO, the primary insurer of Munich Re, completed a $2.6 billion acquisition of the company in Q3 2025, per Insurance Business magazine and Insurance Journal's reporting on the rebrand. The underlying product and underwriting are unchanged.
